Virginia Motor Fuel Road Tax

Effective July 1, 2002, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation that eliminated the Virginia Motor Fuel Road Tax program. This means that if you operate only in Virginia and your vehicle has three or more axles or the gross weight is 26,001 pounds or more, you will no longer be required to file quarterly motor fuel road tax reports or display road tax decals on your vehicle.

This legislation does not apply to International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) carriers who operate vehicles licensed under the International Registration Plan (IRP) in Virginia and other jurisdictions. These carriers must continue to display IFTA credentials and file quarterly IFTA tax reports.

Also, effective July 1, 2002, if your Virginia Motor Fuel Road Tax license and decals have been suspended for failure to file motor fuel road tax reports or pay assessed taxes, you will not be able to renew any of your vehicle registrations or your driver's license until you have satisfied all tax liabilities. Please contact DMV at (866) 878-2582 (voice) or (800) 272-9268 (deaf and hearing impaired) if you have questions.
